About London Stansted

The UK's main low-cost-carrier hub.

Stansted is the UK's third-busiest airport and the dominant base for Ryanair in the British Isles. It's a single-terminal operation built around the iconic Norman Foster-designed terminal building that opened in 1991 and has been progressively expanded since.

The airport's character is firmly low-cost: aside from a handful of mainline carriers (Emirates, Pegasus, Jet2 amongst them), the route map is dominated by short-haul European leisure and business destinations. The result is fast, predictable turnarounds and competitive parking pricing across the board.

Geographically, Stansted sits in fairly flat Essex farmland with plenty of room for off-airport parking compounds. Land prices are lower than around Heathrow or Gatwick, which keeps independent park-and-ride rates among the cheapest in the south-east.

Getting to STN

All the practical access info — by car, train, coach and otherwise.

By road

M11 junction 8 connects directly to the airport. From London, allow 60–80 minutes; from Cambridge, around 45 minutes; from Norwich, around 90 minutes via the A11/M11.

By rail

The Stansted Express runs every 15 minutes between Liverpool Street and the airport — journey time around 47 minutes. Cross-country services link with Cambridge, Birmingham and Stansted Airport's own bus interchange.

By bus / coach

National Express runs 24-hour coaches from Victoria Coach Station. Airport coaches connect Cambridge, Norwich, Ipswich, Oxford and the Midlands. Coach drop-off is at the front of the terminal.

Also worth knowing

The terminal is fully accessible from the rail station via a covered walkway — no shuttle required.

The parking landscape

How parking works at London Stansted

Stansted's official car parks are arranged in concentric rings: Short, Mid and Long Stay. Short Stay is alongside the terminal (ideal for pickups and drop-offs), Mid Stay is a 5-minute walk, and Long Stay is a 5–10 minute shuttle ride.

Independent operators dominate the wider area, particularly along the B1256 and A120. Park-and-ride sites typically run 7–12 minute shuttle intervals during peak hours and undercut the official long-stay price by 30–50%, particularly outside the school holidays.

Pro tips

Tips travellers wish they'd known

  • Friday and Sunday flights see the steepest peaks in pricing — flying mid-week saves an average 10–15% across all parking categories.
  • If your flight is before 6am, the Stansted Express runs limited night services — driving and parking is often the only realistic option.
  • Check shuttle service hours at off-airport sites for late-night returns — some operators reduce frequency after midnight.
  • Independent meet-and-greet drop-off is at the short-stay car park, not directly outside the terminal — allow an extra 5 minutes.
  • The Mid Stay car park is often overlooked but is the cheapest official option for stays of 1–3 days.
Frequently asked

STN questions, answered

The questions our 24/7 team gets asked most about flying from London Stansted.

How early should I arrive at Stansted?+

Two hours for short-haul flights is standard. Stansted security can queue heavily on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings — add 30 minutes.

Is Stansted Express the fastest way from London?+

Yes from central London — 47 minutes from Liverpool Street. Driving via the M11 is similar but more variable in traffic.

Can I drop someone off at the terminal?+

Yes, but Stansted charges a £4–£7 forecourt drop-off fee. The free drop-off is at the Mid Stay car park, with a regular shuttle to the terminal.

Are independent operators cheaper than the airport's own long-stay?+

Typically yes, by 30–50% for stays of 3+ days. Always sort by total price — booking fees can flip the headline rate.

Is Stansted accessible by public transport from outside London?+

Yes — direct trains from Cambridge, Norwich and Birmingham, plus express coaches from across East Anglia and the Midlands.

What's the latest I can drop off and still make my flight?+

Most travellers aim for 2 hours before departure. Stansted's design means it's a quick walk from car park to gate, but security peaks can be unpredictable.
