About Manchester

The UK's third-busiest airport and the largest outside London.

Manchester is the gateway airport for the North of England and one of the few outside London with a sizeable long-haul network. It handles around 32 million passengers a year out of two operational terminals — Terminal 2 (the recently-expanded main building) and Terminal 3.

Terminal 1 mostly closed in November 2025 as part of the airport's multi-billion-pound expansion, with operations consolidated into the expanded T2. The complex now handles all main carriers: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet and TUI alongside dozens of regional and seasonal operators.

Manchester's parking landscape is unusually broad. The site sits in a triangle bounded by the M56, M6 and the A538, with plenty of room for off-airport compounds in Wythenshawe, Heald Green and Hale Barns.

Getting to MAN

All the practical access info — by car, train, coach and otherwise.

By road

M56 junction 5 leads straight to the airport. From Manchester city centre, allow 25 minutes off-peak; from Liverpool, 45 minutes; from Leeds, around 90 minutes via the M62/M60.

By rail

Manchester Airport station is connected to all three terminals by a covered moving walkway. Direct services run to Manchester Piccadilly (15–20 minutes), and longer-distance routes connect Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Penzance.

By bus / coach

National Express runs from across the UK direct to the Ground Transport Interchange. Local Stagecoach services connect with Wythenshawe, Stockport and Manchester.

Also worth knowing

The Metrolink tram serves the airport from Manchester city centre via Wythenshawe — slower than the train but cheaper.

The parking landscape

How parking works at Manchester

Manchester operates official Multi-Storey, Mid-Stay, Long Stay and JetParks lots. The Multi-Storey is attached to T2; Mid-Stay is a short walk; Long Stay and JetParks (the lower-cost long-stay option) are 5–10 minutes by free shuttle.

Off-airport operators are concentrated to the south and east in Heald Green, Wythenshawe and Hale, with a smaller cluster to the west near Hale Barns. Many shuttle every 7–10 minutes during the day; meet-and-greet operators bring your car directly to either terminal forecourt.

Pro tips

Tips travellers wish they'd known

  • JetParks 1, 2 and 3 are the cheapest official options — book directly, they're never sold via aggregators.
  • Independent meet-and-greet sites in Heald Green tend to undercut the airport-operated equivalents by 25–40%.
  • Returning late at night? Check shuttle hours — some park-and-ride operators have reduced overnight service.
  • The covered walkway from rail station to terminals takes 5–10 minutes — factor it into your schedule.
  • T2 has a dedicated drop-off area distinct from the multi-storey forecourt; T3 drop-offs are tighter, especially during peak holiday weeks.
Frequently asked

MAN questions, answered

The questions our 24/7 team gets asked most about flying from Manchester.

How many terminals does Manchester have?+

Two — Terminal 2 (the main, expanded terminal) and Terminal 3. Terminal 1 mostly closed in November 2025.

Is Manchester Airport easy to reach by train?+

Yes — the airport's own station has direct services from across the North of England, plus long-distance trains to London and Scotland.

Which terminal does my airline use?+

Most international and long-haul services operate from T2. T3 hosts a mix of low-cost and short-haul carriers including Jet2 and Ryanair. Always confirm with your airline.

Are independent operators safe?+

Yes when Park Mark accredited. Manchester has several long-established family-run operators with good reputations.

How early should I arrive?+

Two hours for short-haul, three for long-haul. Manchester security can queue heavily during summer school holidays — add 30 minutes if flying in July or August.

Can I leave my car for over a month?+

Yes — both airport-operated long-stay and most independents accept stays of up to 12 months. Verify maximum duration at booking.
