About Cardiff

Wales' main airport.

Cardiff Airport, near Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan, is Wales' principal aviation gateway. It handles around 950,000 passengers a year from a single terminal — passenger volume has been recovering steadily since the COVID downturn but remains below the pre-pandemic peak. The route map is dominated by short-haul European leisure and key UK domestic links to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Carriers are led by KLM, TUI, Ryanair, Wizz Air and Loganair. There are seasonal long-haul services to North America and the Caribbean, plus year-round connections via Amsterdam and Dublin for onward long-haul.

The airport's coastal Vale of Glamorgan setting means parking land is plentiful and rates competitive.

Getting to CWL

All the practical access info — by car, train, coach and otherwise.

By road

A4226 from the M4 (junction 33), via Barry. From Cardiff city centre, around 25–30 minutes; from Swansea, 50 minutes; from Bristol, around 75 minutes.

By rail

Rhoose Cardiff International Airport station is around 2 miles from the terminal, connected by Rail Linc shuttle buses (the previous T9 Express service was withdrawn after the COVID-19 pandemic).

By bus / coach

Rail Linc shuttle buses connect the rail station to the terminal. From Cardiff city centre, regional bus services and pre-booked taxis are the main alternatives — there's no longer a direct dedicated express bus.

Also worth knowing

Cardiff is one of the closer Welsh airports to South West England — for travellers from Bath or Bristol, it's sometimes a viable alternative to Bristol Airport.

The parking landscape

How parking works at Cardiff

Official car parks are Short Stay (next to the terminal), Mid Stay (a short walk) and Long Stay (a 5-minute shuttle).

Off-airport supply is more limited than at larger airports but several operators serve Rhoose and Barry. Independent rates beat the airport's own long-stay by 20–40% on most stays.

Pro tips

Tips travellers wish they'd known

  • T9 Express is the cheapest public-transport option from Cardiff city centre — far cheaper than driving and parking for short trips.
  • Long Stay shuttle frequency drops after 9pm — confirm service hours for late returns.
  • Forecourt drop-off costs a small fee after the first few minutes; longer waits use the Mid Stay free zone.
  • Cardiff's coastal location means weather is generally milder than inland UK airports — winter disruption is rare.
  • Most TUI and Ryanair Mediterranean routes peak in school-holiday weeks — book 14+ days ahead for the cheapest parking.
