About Liverpool
Liverpool's primary airport, serving the wider Merseyside region.
Liverpool John Lennon Airport is the smaller of the North-West's two main airports (Manchester being the larger) and is the dominant choice for travellers from Liverpool, the Wirral and parts of Cheshire. It handles around 5.6 million passengers a year from a compact, single-terminal operation.
The route map is short-haul Europe-focused with strong easyJet and Ryanair operations and a smaller Wizz Air, Jet2 and TUI presence. There's no scheduled long-haul, but onward connections via Amsterdam (KLM) and Dublin open up the rest of the world.
Liverpool's compact terminal means walking distances are short, security can be quick and door-to-gate times are some of the lowest in the UK.
Getting to LPL
All the practical access info — by car, train, coach and otherwise.
A561 from the M62 junction 6, or M57 junction 1 via the A561. From Liverpool city centre, around 20–25 minutes; from Manchester, 50 minutes; from Chester, 30 minutes.
There's no rail station at the airport. The nearest is Liverpool South Parkway, connected by the Airlink 500 bus (10-minute journey).
Airlink 500 runs from Liverpool city centre and Liverpool South Parkway every 20–30 minutes. National Express coaches link to Manchester, London, Birmingham and the rest of the UK.
Plans for a rail link via Liverpool South Parkway have been discussed but no airport station is in service.
How parking works at Liverpool
Official car parks are Express (next to the terminal), Mid Stay (a short walk) and Long Stay (a 5-minute shuttle). All three are operated by the airport.
Off-airport operators concentrate along the A561 and around Speke and Hunts Cross. Independent rates are competitive and often beat the airport's own long-stay by 25–40%.
Tips travellers wish they'd known
- Express car park is genuinely a 2-minute walk to check-in — for trips under 24 hours it's often the best balance of cost and convenience.
- Off-airport park-and-ride along the A561 typically beats the airport's Long Stay on price for 3+ night trips.
- Returning late at night? Confirm shuttle hours — some independents reduce service after midnight.
- Drop-off is allowed at the forecourt for free for the first 10 minutes.
- Liverpool's small footprint means door-to-security can be under 5 minutes — but always allow standard buffer time during summer school holidays.
LPL questions, answered
The questions our 24/7 team gets asked most about flying from Liverpool.
Is Liverpool Airport easier than Manchester for Merseyside travellers?+
