About Southampton Cruise Port
The UK's busiest cruise port.
Southampton is the UK's busiest cruise port and one of the largest in Europe, handling around 2 million cruise passengers a year across five operational terminals. It's the homeport of P&O Cruises and Cunard, and a major embarkation point for Royal Caribbean, Princess, Fred Olsen, NCL and several others.
The five terminals — Ocean, City, Horizon, QE II and Mayflower — are spread across the city's docklands, with each typically dedicated to one or two cruise lines on a given sailing day. Travellers should always check which terminal their ship is using before driving in.
Compared to airport parking, cruise-port parking is a slightly different beast: stays are usually 7 to 14 days (matching cruise itineraries), and most operators offer either park-and-ride (shuttle to terminal) or park-and-walk (drop luggage at terminal first, then park and walk back). Port-area traffic peaks sharply on Saturdays — the main embarkation day.
Getting to SOTP
All the practical access info — by car, train, coach and otherwise.
From the M27, exit at junction 3 onto the M271, then follow signs to the Western Docks. From the M3 southbound, follow signs to Southampton, then to the docks. Allow extra time on Saturday mornings during cruise season.
Southampton Central is the nearest mainline station, around 1 mile from the cruise terminals. From central London Waterloo, around 75 minutes by SWR direct trains. Onward to the terminals by taxi or short bus.
Local Bluestar and Unilink buses serve the docklands area. Most cruise passengers transfer from rail or by car/coach.
National Express runs cruise-day coach services from London Victoria and other major UK cities directly to the cruise terminals.
How parking works at Southampton Cruise Port
Cruise-port parking falls into two camps: park-and-ride (you park at an off-port compound and a shuttle drops you at your specific cruise terminal) and park-and-walk (you park, drop luggage at the terminal, then walk or take a short shuttle back). Walk distances vary — Ocean Terminal is closest at around 0.3 miles, Mayflower is the furthest at around 1 mile.
Most operators offer both options at slightly different prices. Park Mark accreditation is widespread for the licensed cruise-port operators.
Tips travellers wish they'd known
- Confirm your terminal before driving — Saturdays in cruise season can have multiple ships embarking simultaneously.
- Drop your luggage at the terminal first, then park — this is much easier than wheeling cases from car park to ship.
- Saturday traffic in the dock area peaks 9am–noon. If your sailing allows, arrive earlier or later to avoid the queue.
- If walking is hard for you, ask the park-and-walk operator for a shuttle — most offer one for a small additional fee.
- Book early for Easter, summer school holidays and Christmas — cruise-season weekends sell out weeks in advance.
SOTP questions, answered
The questions our 24/7 team gets asked most about flying from Southampton Cruise Port.
Which terminal will my cruise use?+
P&O typically uses Ocean and Mayflower. Cunard's Queen ships often use Mayflower. Royal Caribbean, Princess and NCL use a mix depending on day. Always check your cruise line's pre-departure documents.
What's the difference between Park & Ride and Park & Walk?+
Park & Ride: you park at an off-port compound and a shuttle takes you to your cruise terminal. Park & Walk: you park near the port, drop luggage at the terminal, then walk back to the car park. Walk distances range from 15 to 50 minutes depending on terminal.
Can I leave my car for two weeks?+
Yes — most cruise-port operators take stays of up to 30 days. Verify the maximum at booking.
Is parking cheap at Southampton Port?+
Mid-priced. Saturday-to-Saturday cruise itineraries get you the best per-day rate.
Are operators Park Mark accredited?+
Most licensed cruise-port operators carry Park Mark or equivalent accreditation. Check the listing before booking.
Should I arrive on the day or the night before?+
If you have a long drive (3+ hours) and an early embarkation slot, an overnight stay in Southampton the night before is often worth it. Many hotels offer 'cruise stay and park' bundles.
