About Belfast City

Belfast's compact city-side airport.

George Best Belfast City Airport sits on a single runway extending into Belfast Lough, just 3 miles from the city centre. It's the smaller of Belfast's two airports but the closer-in option, dominated by short-haul UK domestic and short-haul European business flights.

Carriers are led by Aer Lingus, British Airways, easyJet, KLM and Loganair. The route map is heavy on UK regional links (especially Edinburgh, Manchester and London City) plus Amsterdam for onward long-haul connections.

Operating hours are restricted by local agreements due to the airport's urban setting — there are no scheduled flights overnight, and aircraft size is limited by the runway length.

Getting to BHD

All the practical access info — by car, train, coach and otherwise.

By road

Sydenham Bypass (A2) east from the city centre. Around 10 minutes from Belfast city centre by road.

By rail

Sydenham railway station is a short walk from the terminal. Frequent NIR Bangor-line trains link with Belfast Lanyon Place (city centre) in 8–10 minutes.

By bus / coach

Translink Metro route 600 (the Belfast City Airlink) connects the airport with Belfast Grand Central station, the city's main rail and bus interchange.

Also worth knowing

The airport's central location means a black taxi from the city centre is genuinely a sensible short-trip option.

The parking landscape

How parking works at Belfast City

Official car parks are Short Term, Long Term and Premium — all within walking distance of the terminal. The site is small enough that no shuttle bus is needed.

Off-airport supply is limited because of the dense urban setting. A handful of meet-and-greet operators serve the airport, but most travellers either drive in directly or take the train.

Pro tips

Tips travellers wish they'd known

  • BHD is genuinely close to Belfast city centre — for residents, taxis often beat parking on cost for trips under 3 days.
  • Sydenham rail station is steps from the terminal — confirm schedules if travelling outside peak hours.
  • On-airport short-term parking is the practical default for very short trips.
  • BHD's runway length restricts aircraft to short-haul — long-haul travellers fly via BFS, Dublin or London.
  • Direct connections to London City and Amsterdam make BHD popular with business travellers.
Frequently asked

BHD questions, answered

The questions our 24/7 team gets asked most about flying from Belfast City.

Is BHD really walking distance from a train station?+

Yes — Sydenham station is around a 10-minute walk from the terminal, with frequent trains to Belfast city centre.

Why is BHD smaller than Belfast International?+

The runway is shorter and operating hours are restricted because of the urban setting. It's optimised for short-haul UK and short-haul European business travel.

Are there long-haul flights from BHD?+

No direct long-haul. Long-haul travellers connect via Amsterdam, Heathrow or Dublin.

Is parking expensive?+

On-airport rates are mid-priced — fewer off-airport options keep competition lower than at BFS.

How early should I arrive?+

60–90 minutes for short-haul UK flights, 90–120 for European. The terminal is small and security is fast.

Can I drop off at the front of the terminal?+

Yes — short stops are free; longer waits use the short-term car park.
